Attack on Titan, or Shingeki no Kyojin as some may refer it to, is an anime and manga with a genre of dark fantasy, dystopian and tragedy. The story is set in a world where humanity lives inside cities surrounded by huge walls to protect them from the destroying Titans, whom eat humans for no reason although are believed to eat humans with the purpose of destroying humanity. There are three main characters that the story evolve around. The first main one being; Eren Jaeger. Together with his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackerman and their best friend Armin Arlert they train and join the military group Survey Corps in order to kill Titans which will lead to their extinction.
Now, I started this series by watching the anime first. When the anime ended after only 25 episodes, I picked up the manga in order to find out what happened after the anime.
In my opinion, the manga is better than the anime, but only by a little. The reason for this is because after reading the whole manga, I felt like the anime left out quite some important bits, and also because the anime ended with a huge cliff hanger. Don’t get me wrong though, I love cliff hangers cause they can lead up to discussions. However, with the fact that the anime had to end due to it almost catching up to the manga, it means that there won’t be a season two for quite some time. Because of this fact, I feel that the anime should have ended with a closing ending, since it might take over a year for them to even start making a second season.
The best thing about the anime is the animation and soundtrack. I absolutely love the animation on this anime, the colours are great and the movements are flawless. Seeing that this is an anime with a lot of movement and action, I truly appreciate the motions. The soundtracks just compliments the whole setting so well. It makes you more emotionally attached and you get a more lively feeling to it.
My only problem with this anime is the main character Eren.
Although he is a complete badass that *spoiler* can turn into a Titan, he is the most annoying person in the series ever to exist. I really wish Mikasa or someone else, anyone, would have these super powers instead of Eren. The best thing he’s good at is; whining and complaining. Every single time he is supposed to turn or needs to keep cool, he just lashes out and just screams when he needs to keep his tits calm. Lord have mercy on this boy, I swear. If I was Mikasa I’d just slap him around all the time, he needs to get his shit together, seriously. Maybe then I won’t have such a problem with him having this amazing Titan power. However, I will not judge too much, since there is still a lot to unravel in the story, and I’m sure with that, a more mature Eren will arise.
The second main character is Mikasa, whom I love with a passion.
The anime world needs to introduce more female badass characters like Mikasa. Honestly, she is one of the elite people in the Survey Corps to kill Titans. Her skills are just beyond amazing and I know she holds a lot more power than she knows of herself. Compared to Eren, Mikasa is a very collected and calm person. Even when the worst imaginary thing happens to her, she remains calm and continues on with the mission. It takes a really mentally strong person to keep on fighting as she does, and although she is very dependent on Eren, she is very independent in her own way. This is also something that I think she doesn’t know of herself yet – the fact that she doesn’t need Eren as much as she thinks she does. Either way, she is just the most flawless character in the anime/manga. I mean, what’s not to love about this amazing woman?
And lastly, we have the blonde character Armin.
At first, I wasn’t too fond of this character. Mainly because of how insecure he was as a person. He really had no self confidence in himself at all, I can not emphazie this enough. However, as the anime/manga developed, he grew as a character and ended up beliveing in himself and his ways of thinking different types of strategy on how to kill Titans. Towards the end of the anime, I actually start to like him more for this reason. He comes up with some really clever plans and I really enjoy that he has confidence in them, in him and in every member of the squad. It makes him very likable compared to how he was at the begining.
Even though the anime ended and there is no second season confirmed yet (although with how well it went, it’s very likely it’ll happen), the manga still continues and it is full of surprises. There are so many things that happen after the anime ends, so I highly recommend everyone that’s seen the anime to pick up the manga and read it. There’s a chapter released each month, so the process is a bit slow (no wonder the anime caught up to the manga), but it’s so worth the wait.
Trust me.
